Baby Z {birth story}

What a gift to capture new life and all of the emotions that are wrapped up in bringing a new baby into the world.  It is one of my favorite things.  I think when I grow up I want to be a doula… we shall see.

Kayla sent me a message earlier in the day, it was a Thursday, saying that the doctor said today may be the day.  This is her and hubby Josh's first baby, so I wasn't quite sure how long it would take.  They went home from their doctor visit so that Kayla could freshen up before delivery.  Absolutely adorable.. and I might add that Kayla did look quite beautiful… pearls and all!  She got her mascara on between contractions and after a few hours they headed back to Clovis Community to see if she would be admitted.

After a lot of pain and then an epidural, I walked into a very calm room with Mom making phone calls and texting family about the baby's impending arrival.  At this point it was nearly midnight and contractions had spread considerably further apart after the epidural.  We visited, we laughed, we watched Josh fall asleep in the chair…

By about 2am I decided to head home. It is super convenient that we live three minutes from the hospital (five tops, I'm horrible with time). I got a call at 4:30am-ish that they had broken her water and were hoping for some action within the next hour.

When I got back to the hospital it was almost time to push and we were all so excited!  Josh and Kayla had pretty well been up all night, so they were EXHAUSTED.  The contractions were much more intense now and Kayla was at the most uncomfortable point of labor - transition.  Josh was such a great coach for Kayla!!  He was so encouraging and just wanted to do anything he could to help her be more comfortable.  Lisa, Josh's mom, was also there for loving support.  Everyone had been up all night to be there for Kayla, who was completely worn out.

Just after 6:30am it was time!!! (poor thing waited soooo long to push)  Kayla had a FABULOUS nurse who coached and encouraged her through her pushes.  Baby Z was crowning but still had a bit to go unfortunately, they got a call that Dr. was on his way, but they had to stop pushing until he got there.  One of the most horrible feelings (and I base this on experience) is feeling the urge to push and having to breathe through it… Praise God that He is always with us even during times like this!!!

Just after 8am it was time to push again!! ;)  Kayla worked so very hard.  She was physically exhausted from laboring all night that she would literally pass out between pushes.

Baby Z was born at 8:56am weighing in at 8lbs9oz and 21.25 inches long!!  Such a big boy!! He was so adorably squished when he came out.  Everyone had tears… especially Kayla.  It was one long night and she had been awake over 24 hours… After Josh cut the cord they put Baby Z on Kayla's chest...

After a quick clean-up and check of his lungs, the nurse snuggled Baby Z back on his Mama's chest for some quiet time.

The sweet love between a Mother and her child is one of the most precious gifts God blesses us with.  These moments are memories that will never fade; they are permanently written on our hearts.

I snuck out as family and friends began to come meet the newest Little Ediger.  Welcome to the world, Baby Z!!  I love you!!  And I love you, Ediger Family!!  May the Lord continue to pour out His grace and love on you, overflowing in measure.
